Lee and Bessie, two sisters, went, their separate ways years ago. The fiercely independent Lee moved to Ohio and Bessie, the older of the two, returned to their parents’ house in Florida when their father, Marvin, suffered a heart attack. Bessie has been looking after not only her bedridden father but also her eccentric Aunt Ruth for many years. However, a series of medical examinations reveals that her own condition is not at all good - Dr. Wally has diagnosed leukaemia - and Bessie’s only hope of survival is to find a relative with the same bone marrow for a transplant operation. Lee has problems of her own. A single mother, her son, Hank, has just been admitted to a mental institution on account of his delinquent behaviour. Her sister’s alarming phone call comes like a bolt from the blue. They haven’t spoken to each other for twenty years and Lee can barely remember what it’s like to be a daughter or sister . . . On the spot, she fetches Hank from the clinic and sets off with him and her other son, Charlie on the long trip home. Meeting Bessie again is by no means easy - the two sisters are worlds apart. Hank’s attitude to the new environment is at first very cold and unresponsive. It’s all the more surprising therefore, that it should be this boy who somehow manages to bring the two sisters closer together. He begins to trust Bessie and, for the first time, feels he has found someone who understands him. Lee observes these developments and begins to see her own son in a completely different light. Bessie is convinced that her decision to stay with her family was the right one, Lee, on the other hand, feels that Bessie has wasted the best years of her life. |
